Abstract
The article asks what „sickness of the spirit” is in its inner structure. Models of pneumopathology (Frankl, Lukas, Costello) rightly recognize an irreducible noological dimension of suffering but cannot supply its ontological content. Through historical reconstruction and systematic correlation, it is shown that this content is provided by Maximus the Confessor’s dyothelite Christology – his distinction between natural and gnomic will. Gnomicity is the precise theological articulation of spiritual sickness; deification, as real participation in Christ’s two wills, is the horizon of its healing.
