Abstract
Abstract. The aim of this article is to analyze the role of preprints in the open access policies of higher education institutions in Poland and their presence in institutional repositories. Methods: The paper presents the results of surveys and an analysis of the content of selected Polish academic repositories. The data sources include surveys completed by representatives of 33 academic libraries, a review of the content of 59 institutional repositories, and an exploration of preprints and their links to scientific publications. The applied research methods included a review of repositories and an online survey. A discussion of the significance of preprints in the global scientific communication system provided the context for interpreting the results obtained. Conclusions: The findings indicate that preprints remain a marginal element of open access policies in Polish academic institutions, and their presence in repositories is limited. A low awareness of the potential benefits of publishing preprints, as well as formal and organizational barriers, was also identified. In conclusion, the need for the development of consistent principles regarding preprints in the open access policies of universities, better adaptation of repositories to their deposition and sharing, and the necessity for the development of support and training for the academic community were emphasized.
