Abstract
The article discusses the use of case studies in teaching history in both the American and Polish models of legal education. This method is not uniform, and variations can be used depending on the goal we want to achieve and the materials used in specific classes. The first part of the article discusses the experiences of American universities in applying and developing this method, with particular emphasis on teaching legal history. It also points to criticism of the case study method and the problems associated with its use. An example of students using specific cases from legal history is John Wertheimer's university course, in which students work on court materials found in local archives. The second part points to the problems that the case study method may cause in the Polish education model. It refers to the use of case studies and case study collections in classes on Roman law, legal history, and the history of political systems. It focuses primarily on methodological guidelines and advice on the proper way to solve case studies. The article emphasises the need to publish more case collections and suggests that paraphrased historical sources may improve first-year law students' understanding of the material.
