Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present the role of mediation competence and to reflect on effective ways to develop it in the training of foreign language teachers. The theoretical section analyses the importance of mediation in language education and provides examples of mediation strategies, with particular emphasis on concept mediation. The empirical section presents the objectives and course of a teaching-research project carried out as part of the Second Language Teaching course, which prepares applied linguistics students for careers as foreign language teachers. The aim of the teaching activity was to make future foreign language teachers aware of the importance of exposure to linguistic data in developing communicative competence in a foreign language, to expand their repertoire of mediation strategies, and to develop their ability to manage group interactions. The results of a survey conducted among students provide information that allows for the evaluation of the assignment and its effectiveness in developing the mediation competencies of future foreign language teachers.
