Abstract
The monograph by Christoph Rolker (with a contribution by Robert Somerville) traces the development of canon law collections during a period crucial to medieval canon law (c. 1000 to c. 1150). The authors successfully present the sources within a broad context. Rather than taking a merely descriptive approach, they employ a rich comparative method that results in an in-depth analysis of the sources and their historical background. In many instances, they offer novel conclusions to issues that have been widely debated in the scholarship. This book makes a significant contribution to the state of the art in the study of medieval canon law.
